Philip Shaw

"Every wine should be placed on its own canvas and should not be a replica of others; you should be guiding the direction of the wine not controlling it. Always challenge the achievements." Philip Shaw

Philip is one of the world's leading winemakers. He is the only one to twice win the coveted Winemaker of  the Year at the London International Wine and Spirit Competition (in 1986 and 2000). He was also the 1999  Qantas/Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine's — Australian Winemaker of the Year.

Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Philip began making wine when he was 12 years old, using the bathtub and lemonade bottles! At 15 he began working at wineries in the Adelaide area, notably Penfolds and Wynns Magill.

After graduating from Roseworthy, Philip assumed the role of head winemaker with Lindemans Karadoc in 1972 at age 24.

He then became Rosemount Estate's winemaker in 1982 and was instrumental in their extraordinary success around the world. Following the merge between Rosemount and Southcorp Wines, Philip was group winemaker for Southcorp Wines for the 2001-2003 vintages.

While at Rosemount, Philip established his own vineyard in Orange in 1989. This followed years of searching Australia for the best site. His belief in the region has been backed by numerous international awards. For example, the 1997 Rosemount Orange Vineyard Chardonnay, made by Philip from his own vineyard, won the 1999 Prix D'Exellence at Vin Expo in Bordeaux.

In 2003 Philip joined Cumulus Wines to restructure operations and build the new brands. From December 2007, Philip will act as a consultant winemaker to Cumulus, devoting most of his time to his own labels.

Philip firmly believes in the region and aims to unveil this hidden Olympus on the world stage.
